Leica SL Review with the M

Up to three elements with aspherical surfaces, predominantly on both sides, are employed within the optical systems for the correction of monochromatic aberration. Their speed enables a wide range of new opportunities, for instance the creative use of depth of field to isolate foreground subjects from the background. I owned the 24-90 for a brief time but when it sat in my cabinet never getting use, I sold it. This is why I have a positive impression of them - despite negative reports. I have been addicted to Leica binoculars for over 2 decades. Literally every person I handed the camera to with the native zoom said it felt uncomfortable. Then also you didn't like the fact that I'm familiar with the X1D. Anything but standard The new 50 mm lens sets new standards in terms of compactness and performance. There is hardly an aberration, and the images were sharp. Yes its typical Leica design with its minimalistic looks and controls but is it too early to go and get one? Too late to edit, but I need to add this. You mention the lenses being big and heavy and the combination of the two, body and lens, feeling awkward to handle. But this is a big error on your part. I know myself, so there is a good chance that I did something wrong, not the camera. No need to buy a new camera for this feature. Yeah but Sony cameras are pig awful to use. But except for that one example there maybe one I've not tried they lag Leica for optical quality. So you need to use it in a slightly different way. I have to look more at the images, but it seems Leica has done something here. To further increase their effectiveness, we flock the inner surfaces, which ensures that the lens hoods remain effective, even after many years of intensive use. To build a powerful ¨I Robot¨ to conquer the world, fit it with the S1 body and the Leica eyes. Sorry, I've tried all the cameras I reference, and am very clear when I've not. Again it all points to a rush job. None in my view, so it comes down to what camera works best for you, what gets the job done with minimum fuss. Yep, it was expansive and my wife was not too pleased, but i would do it again. Maybe its a good advice for you to wait a little before deciding that the newer Panasonic is the better camera? Since lenses with the Leica name are available for other cameras - I am not going to assume Leitz has much else to do with them than literally that - then Leica ought to be persuaded to do us and themselves the favour, for those of us with deep pockets that is. I'd like you to try and say that sentence to anyone from an absolute 13 year-old amateur to an 80 year-old professional cinematographer, and see the reaction they get on their face. After ten days, I can say that the pre-release prototype does hold its own. Those Zeiss Batis for the Sony A7 body series are optically excellent. This technology most likely comes from Panasonic, and we know. Henry I think its best to leave it. I state this because imagine buying one only for Leica about 6 months down the line bringing a Mk2 version out with a ergonomically better grip, rounded edges and so forth. This S1 may be the new King of M lens shooting and my Canon 50 1. Also back then, it was 36 images per roll of film. For me photography brings more fun than a new car. I would expect that to see in the very near future. Although this mode must be used on a tripod, the Panasonic S1R surprised us with its capability to deal with moving elements. The color was nice as well, right out of the camera. Prime lenses offer their own special qualities: they are compact and fast, and deliver outstanding image performance. Logo of the L-mount alliance Type Bayonet, digital interface Inner diameter 51. And I will call you a cliched Leica Freak. By the way, I have shared some photos over on my photoblog. Duh, it's reasonably expensive for a camera body, in the range of pro Canikon bodies--while much less than serious Phase medium format bodies. Four years later, Leica has joined the L-mount alliance with Sigma and Panasonic, which gives users access to more gear and lenses for L-mount camera users. Having all the foregoing comments into account, Steve, I feel that it is important to enlighten your readers that the importance of camera and lens quality is not a vital issue to ensure a final award winning result, this statement should not be taken as an absolute matter-of-the-fact since the merits of its roots can only be accepted when only human framing is ifocused. Now now I can't personally attack an Internet entity named Howaboutraw : I choose to attack your logic and reasoning. So it produces optimal results with these lenses. It is a little less warm and a tad less analog. In your insecurity, you just had to post cliched Leica bashing. The assortment of shooting aids is rather rich, with a live histogram, level, focus peaking and audio monitors available to you - but unfortunately, you have to switch between these, as they aren't all available at once on your screen. Further to my previous comment on the Panasonic S1, may I add this comment: a camera is a two piece equipment, the body and the lens. Do tell how you have used the X1D? This gets funnier and funnier. I would also much prefer it to Leica Q sized. Even getting two to five images on a given day is a great personal achievement. And yes the lever does actually wind something up--well reset something. Isn't that what we should be looking at as well as geeky, coffee sipping reviews? All it needs to bring them together is a single ring: the Leica M-Adapter L. It was not as easy to use on the 5Ds - dof control was quite cumbersome. Or if you can handle it with manual lenses some mentioned Zeiss lenses then it works anyway. What I like best in the camera? The battery charger is odd with the S1, that is all I will say for now. I've tried, rented, owned, used the lenses, you haven't. There are lots of things a Subaru will do that a Ferrari won't, but the Ferrari will do a few things spectacularly better than that Subaru. Maybe a predictable Situation in the clubs where you shoot helps with that. So Leica will always just be a niche player. This in-camera method even makes image stabilization available to lenses that are not equipped with their own. In 2018 Leica formed the , licensing and to use an upgraded version of the mount for their own products, opening the way for a more extensive system of fully compatible cameras and lenses. I look forward to trying it again, but right now in early 2017 there are issues. And I agreed with them, even after weeks of using it, during which time I did not sit around the Amazon office and drink coffee, as you can plainly see from all the sample photos peppered throughout the review, as well as the sample gallery itself. It seems to give better color as well as the disclosed updates. N o b o d y but Leica leaves off features that hardly anybody needs or knows how to use. Feels like it was sculpted from a solid chunk of metal. For the correction of chromatic aberration, a very high proportion of the elements is manufactured from specially formulated, high-quality glass types. Second, the color has to be right under mixed and artificial lighting. The rest of the mirrorless cameras have pathetic blackouts unless you are just shooting cats that sit still. Sony could probably avoid this with better heat control, perhaps via firmware. The majority of sales will come from existing Leica shooters, and the majority of them own M-glass. It's ugly and it's fun and all too easy to poke at. Please leave questions and polite comments below if you want a response and if you don't want your comment flagged by YouTube or deleted by me. We can see that detail capture is excellent to the point of appearing somewhat oversharpened. Perhaps the real highlight of the Typ 601 is its 4. They are expensive: always have been, always will be. And Fuji's lenses for the X system are generally optically better than Canikon lenses. Attempting to capture a few dozen photos in 24 hours is adventurous for me. Sorry for me mediocre English communication. Having said that, it is important to note that to be a real ¨Leica on Steroids¨ the S1 must be dressed with a Leica lens, no doubt about it. As a result of this, even highlights in images remain free of color fringing. I am not a native English spoken person. You are delusional as well as insecure. Thanks to its combination of reference-class imaging performance, dust and moisture-proof sealing, and state-of-the-art autofocus technology, this lens knows no limits. The Fuji is here now too so it's going to make it worse for them being even more adaptable and usable. Lots of people claim to see pink fluffy unicorns and testify to their existence but no scientific evidence can prove they actually exist. I am extremely passionate about photography and video and my goal in making these videos is to share my passion and enthusiasm with you! Please help to this article by more precise citations. If I may, before I expand further my remarks on your reply, which, in my humble opinion, deserves additional brush strokes, for the sake of enlarging the objective horizons of your readers on what photography is all about, let me brief you with a short summary of my personal experience as a professional photographer. The , announced in September 2018, opened up the system to partners and. But, if I maybe blunt, an amateur brought the camera then okay they have the money but to me, I use my gear as a keen hobbyist. There are no native macro lenses available, yet. Thanks to this shallow depth of field and exceptional imaging performance, every single lens guarantees the special look for which Leica photography is renowned. Leica, the camera company, seems to have no great trouble selling bodies and lenses and making money. As stated elsewhere, I have more keepers with them. I used to lust after a Leica but not now. Or be prepared to spend real money on Zeiss Otus lenses for a Nikon on Canon body. No, no, sorry to burst your bubble but I'm far from angry. The really great German manufacturing, and the simplicity of the system, how you operate the buttons and the menu. Great review, as always, Steve! When I worked for a leading men´s, Playboy like, Brazilian magazine in the mid 70´s in Paris and Madrid, I used a Nikon El full system you can buy one today for 100 dollars in E-bay , had some of my shots prized for street candy, I was never concerned with tech specs, always trying to tell a story. In bad light situations, both about equal. Beside the Leica S-System, the -System is the 2nd professional camera system in the company's product portfolio. In this interview, five members of the Leica team involved in the development of these lenses explain how it was all made possible: Product Manager Steffen Skopp, Optical Designer Dietmar Stuible, Heiko Schnaubelt from Electronics Development, Systems Engineer Torsten Grabau from Construction, and Industrial Engineer Simon Jennemann. The choice is usually straightforward, the lenses etc. It is always ready to take the next picture. However if they would need to focus on something moving quickly that option for pro level bodies drops to two. My review will be based on this kind of use, for the Leica crowd. The level of detail is nothing short of stunning. Both Canon lenses and Nikkors are plenty good enough in that regard. You're the one that said Canon and Nikon systems are for people who don't care about optical quality, but I'm the one that looks ignorant? And it's what will be a tool that will allow us to greatly improve our work. Please do not 'unlike' just because you don't like the camera or the brand. Do you have raws from the 7+ full framed cameras I cited? However, dear Steve, the said principles cannot be perceived in the same layer of an attempt to achive excellency in image quality. But I drive a car older than 20 years. The mount is used by the discontinued , , and systems. So the quality differences come to a large degree from the lenses, and maybe to an even larger degree from the software used to edit the raws. Albeit I see some sample variation in the bigger zoom, so need to find raws shot with a third example. Sigma announced that it will launch a full-frame camera in 2019, using the L-Mount and the company's sensor, as well as a range of L-mount lenses and for and lenses. The resolution, angle of view and the refresh rate of the viewfinder should exceed the human eye's ability. Normally when combining multiple images, any movement in the frame results in artefacts moving leaves on a tree for example. I defend the use of optically better lenses, those lenses are hardly limited to Leica. What would you consider a Better solution. I recently shot a film in L log and sent the files to our color grader in Germany, who masters all of our video files. Brilliance, corner-to-corner micro-contrast, and balanced, harmonious bokeh make the lens a true Leica classic. To know more about our ethics, you can visit our. Not just one skin tone but, all skin tones need to be right on. But the problems are there in all the examples, and only some of these issues which I won't detail because I want to give Hasselblad a chance are likely to be fixed with firmware. Our simulates both daylight and low-light shooting. And users of older M and R lenses. If those things, the optics here, aren't that important one sticks with the basic everyday model. Pressing the 'lighting' buttons at the top of the widget switches between the two. With the alliance between Leica Camera, Panasonic and Sigma, a collective 250 years of experience in the field of lens and camera construction will be combined into one platform. About two-thirds of my photos are shot with my camera on a tripod. Now, in hindsight and after spending some time with the S1, which do you prefer? It is heavy but its an incredibly versatile system. Broader perspectives 35 mm is unquestionably the true standard focal length, and is rarely missing from a well-provided gear bag. The M240 like the M9 had color issues. You could put the money toward a PhaseOne body and Schneider lenses, those are as good as good Leica lenses. I haven't been in Seattle in 25 years and then it was only for a few days. There is certainly a very large segment of pro shooters that could take outstanding photos with any of the lenses and bodies form any these three manufacturers. The L-Mount has an inner diameter of 51. By the way, very nice review, thank you for that great work you guys do! There was no tweaking post processing either so the film showed the lens characterises up. There being one expensive Nikon exception and one Tamron exception, this latter is rumored to be related to a Zeiss design. No, your anger is not funnier and funnier. Whenever I go out with them hanging my neck, I always get admiring looks from fellow birdwatchers, planestpotter and amateur stargazers. Is this a bad thing for Leica? It is also my least favorite lens. With the best film in the you could argue your Leica was delivering the best results, better than a Nikon or whatever with the same film. The most keepers in photography. It is much wider than the M mount which is necessary, because of the added electronic contacts. I just got a Hasselblad X1D and it makes a meal of my Sony a7r2 so it will do the same to this. This was accomplished with a free firmware upgrade. They are for rent a day or maybe a week. Stop pretending that ever said Leica makes the focal length range of Nikon, or Canon, you look ignorant. But I respect your comments because you obviously own it. I would not have been able to pull this feat off with another camera. Within the article, there are affiliate links. Thanks for watching and happy shooting! Also I suspect you mean winding lever, film cameras have rewind crank arms generally--well, if there's no motor. Not the one with the most beautiful single goal or basket. There is no other choice, so this gizmo is good news for photographers. The single image is not that different. Given the resolution, it's hard to ask for more detail than this, but there's an abundance of aliasing and false color given the extremely sharp lens and lack of anti-aliasing filter. The magnification is slightly smaller 0. The S1 body is fit with juvenile muscles. If you want to shoot with Leica glass and get the most out of your lens, then you need a Leica body. The only red dot I want is followed by a M, still I like their designs. I have zero interest in the S1R. The two versions are mechanically and electronically compatible. But, I live here in Seattle and get it back the other way. You may call it cliched Leica bashing if you like. Thanks for the condescension, though. I also have a D800 and a 5Ds - but their pics are at the end more expensive because I have less keepers. Duh, of course there's always a good reason to wait for the V2; I'm sure there are Nikon D4S owners, ones with a limited budget, waiting for the D5S. The buttons recall the M10 and Q2 functional design, so for those like me that also owns other Leica cameras is far more comfortable getting them in the same spots, the complete mastery of the equipment is something that imparts serenity to the subject portrayed. Mother says yes too so please don't just say no it doesn't, at least add something :D the allure of the Leica red dot on a camera is incredible. Same overall shape, size and feel, same mount… but the Panasonic feels, again, just slightly fatter and bulkier and larger to me. The M mount stays as it is - so it is backwards compatible to about the last 50 years. With that said, I would take the S1 if deciding today between the two. Please enjoy my latest review and check out my first impressions and unboxing video for more information: First Impressions: Unboxing Video: Check out my written review with images: Please 'like' if you liked this video and tell your friends if you enjoy the content on my channel. Oh dear what a sweet conundrum! The Artist Series is an ongoing set of videos I produce as documentaries on living photographers. Where most people use techniques like multiple exposures and are more adventures, my style is very staid. Despite its age it is still the best macro lens I know. Less worry about the weather and environmental situations means photographers can focus more on getting the shot. And some of these issues can't readily be fixed with firmware. It is simply the best camera, because it helps to produce the best pics. I like the way my comments were cherry picked. And there are two, or 3, 50mm M lenses that score better than all those other 50s. It isn't just a case of not having the range of lenses, though that is also true, other manufacturers have optically better lenses at other focal lengths that Leica also produce. Again, chances are high that it was my mistake and I did something wrong. Did you really just type that question? Leica has always been behind in low light starting with the M8. If you handle it, you see it is anything but a rush job unlike the X1D. To get that kind of optical performance on the above list, excluding the K1, you'll need newer Zeiss or SonyZeiss lenses. I know despite the lenses the results will be worse than with another make and that should never be true of Leica. It's all rather mildly amusing and entertaining watching you squirm and using your red dot as if it were a badge of honour. Click it for larger and to see the crop. On front there are now two custom buttons. If you buy something after clicking the link, we will receive a small commission. Whether it's a wedding, which requires limited motion, studio portrait photography that requires no motion or a sporting event which requires fast paced motion you just don't see the majority of professional photographers making a living using Leica. So far all the foregoing has covered aspects on photographing people and their actions. Then there are the even more famous binoculars. No I've not handled it, I just commented because I read the review. These demand particularly high precision in the manufacturing process: departures from specified surface curvatures must be within tolerances measured in tenths of micrometers. I have to go look but, I think it is 2. I was genuinely amazed at the quality of the images, which were still and sharp with no noticeable motion blur, yet still conveyed a sense of movement in the subjects. Because lenses and the rest of the gear make up 80-90 % of all costs. The upgrade took less than 5 minutes less time than ordering a new camera with silent shutter. It won't cost you any more to use these links, but it will help me to continue making content like this. I think you might want to re-evaluate your opinions. I know, the wrist joke was probably a micro or macro aggression. I can now add two more comfortably to the list. While I can say I've tried the X1D. I also have in my possession which is a camera I have adored since it came out four years ago. The Panasonic native lenses only 3 so far much heavier, slower and far from being included in the quality league of Leica lenses. The opinions in this video are my own. Additionally, in multishot mode, the tripod-mounted camera can record up to eight consecutive frames, whereby the sensor is shifted in half-pixel increments in between every exposure. There's the Epson R-D1, it mounts M lenses. But I let the real world shooting tests show me what I need to know. I have owned it several times and missed it every time I sold it. It is high time governments investigated the actual cost of production of cameras, because when a car with a 7 year warranty cost less, there is scandal. You can't avoid insults, and you need to issue put-downs. I tend to expose to the right as much as I can without blowing the highlights. This camera should be compare with something like painting - very pleasant to look at but no good to take outdoors. But then, for a system that is supposed to be super professional, it is strange to not find even one constant aperture zoom in the range. Hi Steve, now i understand your passion for fewer Buttons and a clean Interface better. Instead, buttons can be customized to handle nearly any function. You've provide zero raws that counter my point. I made photos on multiple focal lengths: f2, f5. It was announced in 1987 - exactly 30 years ago. However, they are so clear and ultra-thin, I forget that I'm wearing glasses. But how often do you do that? The Fuji Hasselblad lenses are very good optically, they're not as good as Leica's better lenses though. The resolution is ok for my needs, picture-quality is very satisfying. I don't own a Leica of any description neither do I feel a need for one, but judging a camera by the numbers it produces on paper is missing the point. You might find the camera 'pointless' for your purposes, but other people will feel otherwise. And, Seattle does have great coffee.。 。 。
